SANAA, Yemen (AP) -- Yemeni security and health officials say two days of fierce fighting between Shiite rebels and forces loyal to the internationally recognized government has killed at least 55 people from both sides.

The officials said Sunday that 70 people were wounded in the fighting over the past 48 hours in the provinces of Taiz, Bayda and Marib.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief reporters.

Yemen's war pits rebels known as Houthis, supported by troops loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, against President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi's forces.

In a televised speech on Saturday, Saleh said he would not recognize Hadi's government and that he had presented an initiative to solve Yemen's crisis to both parties to the peace talks taking place in Kuwait.
